The SDA application process explained

Embarking on a journey towards your Shift Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) home is an exciting time.

Whether you are already approved for funding or you are just starting out on your SDA journey, there are steps to take you from where you are now, to the possibilities of a new home.

We share some tips below on how to navigate the SDA applicant process.

I don’t currently have a housing goal in my NDIS plan

You can submit a ‘Request for Home and Living Support’ form. If you receive a housing goal in your NDIS plan, you can then discuss your options with a support coordinator

I have a housing goal in my NDIS plan

Easy! Have a chat with a Support Coordinator who can help you navigate your options.

  • You are recommended to explore your eligibility for SDA. You assistive technology needs can be assessed at this time
  • Your Support Coordinator will provide a referral to an Occupational Therapist for an SDA functional assessment
  • Your Occupational Therapist will complete an SDA functional assessment and provide a report with recommendations for your SDA eligibility, design category, building type and occupancy
  • Your Support Coordinator will then prepare and submit an SDA housing plan to the NDIA

If you are eligible for SDA…

You could be fully approved for a housing goal in your NDIS plan, or approved at a different level or category.

If you are not eligible…

If you are not approved for a housing goal in your NDIS plan, your support coordinator can help you review other housing options available to you. This might include:

  • Supported Independent Living (SIL)
  • Individualised Living Options (ILO)
  • Mainstream Housing
  • Home modifications
  • Short or medium term accommodation (respite)

Your support coordinator can also appeal the decision if you are not satisfied with the outcome. If you are approved, you can find a vacancy or discuss building options with Shift.
